Pure & Applied Algebra, 1996. \begin{abstract} We apply the techniques of highly structured rings and modules to obtain results on the commutative algebra of the cohomology of the classifying space of a compact Lie group. This generalizes results of Benson--Carlson \cite{bc3,bc5} and Greenlees \cite{groupca} in the case of finite groups. In particular, we prove a functional equation for the Poincar\'e series in the oriented Cohen--Macaulay case. \end{abstract}
