ABDNP201971a01.JPG - Mystery Object This eye-catching device, almost certainly designed for the lecture demonstration table, is dated 1840 - 1860, from a label on its base that is thought to have been attached in 1860. The scale markings never go beyond 90°. It looks at first sight to be a magnetometer, missing the suspended magnet but the D coils will produce a vertical magnetic field in the central gap and around their edges. If you have any knowledge or suggestions as to what it is and the configuration of the missing suspended items, please e-mail j.s.reid@abdn.ac.uk . With thanks. ABDNP:201971a
