Hicks :Grass and Solar Radiation thermometers Likely dating from the 1870s, these specialist thermometers for the serious meteorological observer were probably used in the King's College observatory. James J. Hicks' Hatton Garden manufactory was perhaps the most important supplier of barometers and thermometers in London at the time. The solar radiation thermometer has built-in electrodes for exciting a gas discharge in the vacuum vessel in order to test the quality of the vacuum in the outer jacket. This was Hick's innovation but even this precaution failed to make such instruments reliable. ABDNP:201162a; ABDNP:201163a
