| 5 | Patrick Copland's Oscillating Prism
Item 404 in Copland's inventory reads: Whirling machine for showing composition of light from coloured rays £1.11.6 and is attributed to his personal collection. This item is exactly that. It performs a variant of Newton's crucial experiment. The prism forms a spectrum on the wall or screen. When the handle is turned the spectrum moves back and forth and hence a point on the screen is subject to a rapidly changing illumination that is in fact a mixture of all spectral colours. White light is then observed on the screen (with a little coloured fringing), showing that white light is indeed simply a mixture of spectral colours. ABDNP:200393a |
