ABDNP200499a01.JPG - Horseshoe Electromagnet This substantial electromagnet is typical of mid 19th century construction but its origin is unknown. Robert Davidson of Aberdeen, an enthusiastic amateur scientist, was a pioneer of the use of electricity for industrial applications, exhibiting in the 1840s a range of machines including an electromagnet, a working electrical saw that could cut through substantial battens of wood and a locomotive that ran on standard gauge railway lines. In many respects he was several decades ahead of his contemporaries, or more importantly, the technology that would make such devices a commercial feasibility. In fact he lived into his nineties, long enough to see his vision of the electrification of society become fact. This electromagnet could date to Davidson's pioneering days in the mid 1840s, though there is no firm evidence to corroborate this attribution. ABDNP:200499a
