ABDNP200173b02.JPG - Warden, Muirhead & Clark Morse Key Warden, Muirhead and Clark, founded in 1875, were large manufacturers of electrical machinery who were particularly noted for their telegraphic apparatus. Their expertise in this area was guided by Latimer Clark, who had a long experience with submarine cables and had conducted extensive experiments on lines and batteries. The assorted contacts on the key remind us that telegraphic circuitry had grown in complexity since the early days. One development that was in place by the time this key was made was the use of duplex communication, where messages are sent and received on the same line at once. It takes some experience to know how to make full use of the contacts. For example 'Z' is the negative battery contact, 'C' the positive ('Z' standing for zinc and 'C' for carbon). ABDNP:200173b
