Like flatworms, the nemertine worms are long and flattened. They lack a body cavity, are unsegmented and have an outer layer covered with cilia. Unlike flatworms, they have an alimentary canal opening to the outside at the mouth and the anus. The sexes are always seperate. Some species of ribbon worms are more than 18m long. Most inhabit shallowseas and coastal waters.
