The elephant's most conspicuous external feature is its long flexible trunk which is an elongation of the nose. The animal rests its weight on a fatty cushion beneath each of its broad feet. The single pair of upper incisors grow into large ivory tusks, and the cheek teeth replace each other throughout life.
