These fish have an upper jaw immovably fixed to the cranium, four pairs of gills and six pairs of grinding teeth, which resemble small, flat plates. The males have a clasper in front of the eyes, probably used during courtship, and a pair in front of the pelvic fins. They live near the sea bottom. The spine in front of the dorsal fin is venemous in some species.
