Scottish operator algebras research (SOAR) is a cluster of researchers in operator algebras, based at Scottish institutions.
Operator algebras is an extremely active branch of functional analysis, with connections to many other areas of mathematics such as topology, algebra, geometry, and dynamical systems.
The objects of study in operator algebra theory are algebras of bounded operators on a Hilbert space, especially C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras.
The aim of the SOAR cluster is to enhance Scottish research into operator algebras, related fields and applications, through:
• developing collaborations between researchers based in different parts of Scotland,
• strengthening connections between Scottish-based operator algebras researchers and researchers across the UK and worldwide, and
• maximising the capability of Scottish-based operator algebras research.
Our regular meetings lie at the heart of the cluster.
These bring world leading experts to Scotland and provide a forum for centre members, particularly students and postdocs, to present their research.
These meetings include time for collaborative discussions, leading to a number of joint publications between cluster members.
Prospective postgraduate students wishing to study operator algebras are highly encouraged to get in touch with our members.
EPSRC DTP funding from universities within the cluster may be available to strong potential students who meet the eligibility requirements (UK citizen or settled in the UK, for fees + stipend, EU citizen or pemanent resident for fees).
We are happy to support promising applications for external funding, from sources such as the following:
• Carnegie-Caledonian Ph.D. scholarships for students with a first-class Honours undergraduate degree from a Scottish university (next deadline: 28 February, 2017).
There are limitations on the number of applicants per university, so internal procedures must be followed.

• Commonwealth scholarships for citizens of Commonwealth countries (apart from the UK).
• Science without borders (Brazil) full doctorate fellowships for Brazilian citizens
• NSERC (Canada) postgraduate scholarships for Canadian citizens/residents whose previous degree was obtained in Canada.
• Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) for Chinese citizens.
• CONACYT (Mexico) for Mexican citizens.
We will also seriously consider strong students with other sources of external funding.
It may not be possible to support all applications.
Ph.D. applicants, with or without external funding, will be considered carefully in accordance with university postgraduate admissions procedures.
We will support promising applications for postdoctoral fellowships in operator algebras, such as:
• Marie Skłodowska-Curie individual fellowships: 2-year fellowships offered by the European Commission, for applicants who have their Ph.D. (at the submission deadline), to be taken at an EC country where the applicant is NOT currently residing (i.e., you can't currently be living in the UK).
• EPSRC postdoctoral fellowships: 3-year fellowships for applicants from anywhere, who have a Ph.D. by the start date. The most relevant type is the "intradisciplinary fellowship"; for this, the project should involve connections between different areas of mathematics. Although there is no official deadline, EPSRC advises submitting early February or late July.
• Newton international fellowships: 2-year fellowships for applicants from outside the UK, run by the British Academy and the Royal Society (deadline: TBA, likely March 2017).
• Science without borders (Brazil) postdoctoral fellowships: 12-month (extendable to 24-month) postdoctoral fellowships for Brazilian citizens.
• NSERC (Canada) postdoctoral fellowship: 2-year fellowships for Canadian citizens or permanent residents, whose Ph.D. was awarded by a Canadian university up to 2 years before the deadline.
• Carlsberg foundation internationalisation fellowships 12-month postdoctoral fellowship for Danish citizens or others with a strong scientific connection to Denmark.
• JSPS (Japan) postdoctoral fellowships for research abroad: 2-year fellowships for Japanese citizens or permanent residents, whose Ph.D. was awarded up to 6 years before the deadline.
• CONACYT (Mexico) postdoctoral program: 2-year postdoctoral fellowships for Mexican citizens.
We are happy to support fellowship applications not listed here.
Postdoctoral fellowship applications require a significant amount of time and work.
Our members have experience in writing and supporting such applications, and can share our expertise when assisting you.
Most fellowship applications require statements from the host institution.
In some cases, there are limitations to the number of such applications we can support.
